The Assistant Vice President will assist their respective Vice President with all tasks pertaining to the job of the Vice President as outlined by Section VI, Part C of the Constitution.
- On an acting basis, assume the responsibilities of his/her respective Vice President, pending an election, in the case that the Vice President resigns, is removed from, or abandons office on or prior to the last day of December; if this occurs after the last day of December, the Assistant Vice President will become the Vice President for the remainder of the term;
- Aid the Vice President with the administration of the Vice President’s responsibilities;
- Possess liaison authority in the area for which he/she has been appointed;
- Maintain the rights and privileges afforded to a Senator; and
- Attend meetings of the Assistant Vice Presidents’ Council.
In addition, the AVP will be responsible for:
- Chair their respective committee(s) in the absence of the Vice President;
- Sit on the AVP Council; and
- Assisting with and/or heading special projects on an ad-hoc basis.
Further and more specifically, the Assistant Vice President will be responsible for the following:
In assisting with administrative tasks and preparing documents and communications, the Assistant Vice President will have the responsibility to:
- Prepare and/or review memorandums and other communications created by or sent to committees chaired by his/her VP;
- Assist in the review of and research for student concerns addressed to the committee; and
- Assist in administrative tasks pertaining to the committee chaired by his or her VP.
In sitting on AVP Council the Assistant Vice President will:
- Work with fellow Assistant Vice Presidents to oversee execution of Senate affinity events;
- Complete other projects, as necessary, as determined by the AVP Council and Executive Board; and
- Provide updates to the Executive Board and Senate on projects the AVP Council is engaged in.
The Assistant Vice President may be asked to attend meetings with his or her Vice President in order to take minutes or other records of business; or to assist with resulting projects. Although the Assistant Vice President may be asked to accompany his or her Vice President to meetings or University events, he or she will not speak or attend on behalf of his or her Vice President unless specifically requested by the Vice President.
The Assistant Vice President will serve at the will of his or her Vice President. He or she will serve a term that ends at the conclusion of Summer I, and can be removed at will if he or she fails to perform the duties of the Assistant Vice President. Should he or she be removed prior to the end of the term, applications will re-open and another Senator may be appointed.
