After reviewing the results of the Food Preferences Survey conducted in April 2009, the Student Government Association (SGA) has worked with members of Student Affairs and the Business Office in determining the immediate future of trays in the dining facilities at Northeastern. This survey, which asked students whether or not they would support Northeastern in removing trays from the dining halls, found that a majority of students would do just that. In the ensuing weeks, some students reconsidered their personal use of trays and many conversations were had as to how we could better support students in removing trays.
To accommodate those students wishing to remove trays from their dining experience, the Business Office has agreed to replace all open rails in International Village with flat surfaces, particularly at the dish return. Further, it is believed that the issues of hot plates and limited seating should be addressed with the opening of the new International Village dining facility this fall. To accommodate those students wishing to use a tray, the University has agreed to purchase trays, although in a lesser amount than originally planned.
The SGA, through the Food Advisory Committee, a committee tasked with addressing concerns within the dining halls and the food venues on campus, will work to educate students of the full picture of tray usage. With the knowledge of the impacts of trays both on water, energy, and food waste, as well as on nutrition, students will have the opportunity to make their choice each time they enter the dining halls.
The SGA will continue to monitor the issue and address any future concerns that arise with regards to trayless dining.
