What comes to mind when you hear the word “sustainability”? It’s much more than just recycling a bottle or turning off a light switch. I promised to take a two-sided approach toward sustainability focusing on both financial and environmental aspects. This will ensure that you as a student, and Northeastern as an institution, are as strong as they can be.
Recycling We have quickly started work on these issues, including new outdoor recycling options and continuing our work to bring recycling into academic buildings. Other potential projects include: reverse vending machines, allowing you redeem bottle and can deposits without leaving campus.
Digitalization & Reducing Paper Usage Potential projects include: putting all of the forms that you use on a daily basis online, utilizing digital textbooks, digital advertising, and a weekly programming e-newsletter to replace the thousands of printed flyers and cards that are distributed on campus each week.
Leveraging Buying Power Your individual financial sustainability is also key: Northeastern has a large student population that we can leverage to save you money. Potential projects include: providing all students with Microsoft products, including Windows and Office (PC/Mac) at no direct cost to the student, partnering with local businesses to provide Northeastern students with discounts on things ranging from coop clothing to travelling, and even local eateries.
