Throughout the past years, I have listened to the concerns of student organizations on campus, and have thought a lot about how to best address these concerns. Many of the issues pertain to the funding, advertising, and marketing of events and organizations around campus. These are many of my ideas, but I want to hear what you have to say. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact me.
Funding Funding is an issue facing many student groups today. While the BRC went through some major changes this past year, there is always room for improvement, and I plan to make the BRC more transparent and move paperwork and forms to an online system. The Student Activity Fee is a shared investment funded by all students and I will work to ensure that it directly benefits each student. However, the BRC is not the only way for groups to obtain funding. I want to explore other avenues of potential funding so we can maximize the resources Northeastern has to offer.
Advertising & Marketing It’s obvious that a strong membership base can help greatly with having a strong student organization. Therefore, many of my ideas pertain to helping make it easier for student organizations to reach out to the student body, as well as allowing students to easily search and find information on what organizations exist on campus. Having a list of all first meetings of each student organization in a central location, as well as incorporating a “student group finder” into the Student Activities website will make it easy for students to search for and join organizations they are interested in. I also want to help make it easier to advertise both your group and your programs by making the Campus Calendar user-friendly (and incorporating it into myNEU), starting an programming e-newsletter, using plasma screens more efficiently, and using background images on campus computers.
Availability of Space With my experience as Vice President for Student Services, I have heard and seen a lot of space and programming issues around campus. One of the main concerns is the lack of available space. With the sheer number of active student groups on campus, space, even for meetings, is a recurring issue. I will continue to work with Scheduling and the Registrar’s office to open up additional spaces on campus and look at how we can adapt the scheduling process to better suit the needs of student organizations.
