Elections Rules and Regulations

The Rules Committee is a standing Association committee, and is responsible for overseeing, regulating, and conducting Association elections (by means of the Direct Election Manual).

"The purpose of the Direct Elections Manual, herein 'the manual,' is to enumerate the processes, rules, and procedures for the directly elected officers of the Student Government Association of Northeastern University, herein 'SGA.' Every candidate for presidential election, as prescribed in the Constitution and Bylaws of the Student Government Association, must adhere to this manual."
- Direct Elections Manual (2008)

All documents related to Association elections are located under the Rules Committee. Efforts to promote the presidential elections are handled by the Administration and Public Relations Committee.

Grievances

A grievance is a charge that a candidate or his campaign has violated this manual, violated the Code of Student Conduct, or otherwise acted in a manner seriously inconsistent with the Student Government Association Constitution and Bylaws in the course of a presidential election.

Any person may file a grievance.

Grievances must be submitted to the Rules Committee via a grievance form before the certification of election results.

History

Direct Presidential Elections are the result of a charge by former Student Government Association President William Durkin to the Senate Nominations and Elections Committee ("SNEC"). The committee was to develop plans for the President of the Student Government Election to be directly elected by the undergraduate student body in the Spring of 2007. As a result of SNEC, the first Rules Committee was formed to oversee Presidential Elections and maintain the Presidential Elections Manual. In the spring of 2007, the Northeastern University undergraduate student body elected Joey Fiore as the first directly elected Student Government Association President.
