Branches
The Student Government Association operates under a structure that resembles a parliamentary democracy. Under this model there lies a separation of power, also referred to as a system of checks and balances, in which each branch reserves powers independent of the other branches; checks refers to the ability, right, and responsibility of each branch to monitor the activities of the other branches, while balances refers to the ability of each branch to use its authority to limit the powers of the other branches. The Student Government Association is comprised of the following branches:
The Executive Branch
- Comprised of the Executive Board (the President and five Vice Presidents)
- Responsible for protecting and preserving the will of the Legislative Branch by faithfully enforcing its legislation
The Judicial Branch
- Entrusted to the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution
- Responsible for enforcing internal policies (Code of Student Conduct) and for applying sanctions for violation of such policies
The Legislative Branch
- Comprised of the Senate (unicameral)
- Responsible for representing the will of the student body through legislation
