SGA Announces Inter-College TRACE Competition

Student Government is excited to bring a new incentive for Colleges and instructors to encourage students to complete their Teacher Ratings and Course Evaluation surveys.
One of SGA's initiatives is to spread promotion and publicity about Teacher Rating and Course Evaluations (TRACE), including its importance and relevance to the University and its students. As the Academic Affairs committee of SGA, we are extremely excited about the upcoming TRACE events this semester.
As of way of executing this goal, we wanted to take a different approach by launching an Inter-College Competition, which would be sponsored by SGA and the Center for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CIETL). This Competition will be implemented this semester with the start of TRACE on Wednesday, November 30 and run for about one week ending Wednesday, December 7. We hope this Competition will increase TRACE participation among students in their respective colleges, and raise awareness regarding why TRACE is essential to the betterment of our University.
Essentially, there will be a thermometer for each college illustrated on the Curry Student Center windows on the ground floor. As the participation percentages increase throughout the duration of the TRACE survey, so will the thermometer heights so that it accurately portrays the percent completed by college. These numbers will be updated daily. The college with the highest percentage at 11 pm on December 7 will win the Competition, and be awarded with a celebratory reception on Monday, December 12 including coffee and tea.
We truly believe that TRACE is essential to bettering the undergraduate experience, but it is only as strong as the number of students participating. That is why we have established the tradition of hosting a TRACE Night at the Library each semester on Reading Day to give students the opportunity passing through Snell Library to fill out their TRACE surveys in return for refreshments and give-a-ways. We are also continuing to find alternative methods to promote TRACE on campus, including creating relationships with WRBB and NUTV, implementing an incentives program, and writing a letter of commendation to professors who reached over 90% participation in their respective classes. All of these initiatives are a part of our long term goal to increase the overall TRACE participation levels.

Northeastern Crafts New Institutional Master Plan

As Northeastern University asseses the ways the facilities and spaces on campus will grow and change over
the next several years, student input is sought.
On a warm day, it’s normal to see students napping, studying, talking and playing Frisbee on Centennial Common. Fifteen years ago, however, that space was used as a parking lot, and Northeastern was mainly considered a commuter school. So how did a school whose campus was more parking lot than residence hall transform into the Northeastern University we know today?
Northeastern University prides itself on its expansion and the creation of spaces like Centennial, but none of these changes would be possible without extensive planning and support. The Institutional Master Plan (IMP) is a report given by the University to the city of Boston that details its plans for expansion and remodeling over a ten-year span. Beginning in 2012, the University—together with city officials and planners—will be putting together our new IMP in order to lay the groundwork for continued growth and expansion.
One of the biggest concerns is working closely with residents of the surrounding neighborhoods and the city of Boston to make the new IMP work for everyone and keep Northeastern held in high esteem within the community. Some of the big questions that have been raised so far involve expansion into the area around the Y (including the creation of new residence areas), reformatting of existing space to allow for bigger and better classrooms and meeting areas, additional space to dedicate to the arts, and ideas of how to best utilize the space that is currently Columbus Lot.
There is only so much that the administration can do in terms of planning, however, and they are now looking to students for what we would like to see happen with our campus over the next decade. SGA Promotes Initiatives with SGAmes Event

In a new outreach event called SGAmes, the Student Government Association was able to educate students about past initiatives, and solicit feedback for future projects. A few weeks ago you might have seen Senators handing out Bingo cards, taking a picture with Shillman cat, or found President Mike Sabo dressed as Waldo. Whether you saw or participated in any of these events you were witnessing SGA’s first SGAmes, an outreach event hosted and staffed by the members of the Student Government Assocation. The goal of the event was to make the student body more aware of Student Government’s role in many of the improvements and projects around campus.
Senators were stationed at different locations across campus handing out bingo cards that could be completed by having a square stamped at each station. This week long event had a variety of stops and activities along the way. Students could receive a stamp at many locations; at the Library, where SGA was promoting 24/7 library hours and swipe printing in Info Commons, at Blackman where they were discussing the recent renovations of the auditorium, at Marino where they were discussing the implementation of the student recreation fee, or at Rebecca’s, where they were promoting the recent renovations. Throughout the week SGA was also holding a food drive to collect food for the Boston Food Bank, another opportunity for students to earn a stamp. Students could also receive a stamp on their card if they attended the Men’s soccer game against Drexel at Parson’s field or attended the Wednesday Farmers Market.
This weeklong event ended on Friday with a grill out in the Library Quad, where students could pick up a twister themed t-shirt and a pair of sunglasses, grab a bite to eat, and talk with SGA members about SGA projects or provide feedback. This was also where students could turn in their completed Bingo cards for a chance to win the grand prize, a pair of Bean Pot tickets. SGA was very happy with the number of students that attended the event, and we look forward to hosting more outreach events in the coming months!

SGA Statement on Husky Link

The Student Government Association would like to take this opportunity to clarify that it does not run the external project currently known as Husky Link. In response to concerns raised to the Association, we would like to clarify that the Husky Link project is being run by a recent alumni and not by SGA. Although a similar project titled Husky Hub was previously an Association project, the connection to SGA is no longer present. To the best of our knowledge, no Association or Student Activity Fee funds were used in SGA's exploration of this concept.
